How It’s Made
We cook brown lentils in our homemade vegetable stock for a rich, hearty base. These lentils are combined with sautéed onions, creating a flavour-packed filling. Our Lentil Bobotie is gluten-free, with no bread or wheat products, making it perfect for those with gluten sensitivities. We finish it with a unique egg custard topping, just like the traditional version.
This dish is easy to prepare—simply thaw and heat in a preheated oven at 180°C. It’s that simple to enjoy this South African favourite, whether you serve it with your choice of sambals or condiments.
A Taste of History
Bobotie dates back to the 17th century when it was brought to South Africa by Indonesian settlers. The Cape Malay community adapted the dish with a mix of aromatic spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and ginger, plus the distinctly South African addition of chutney. We’ve taken this classic and added a touch of raisins and flaked almonds for the perfect bite.
